For what it's worth, the jazz musician Billy Taylor says that musicians must be able to explain why they make the choices they have made. I find that verbalizing them helps me own my options, as well as my choices. From what I have read, that is part of the process of laying down neural networks that we call upon when we work. And actually doing it has convinced me it works. There is no reason to think it applies only to music.
