Gene, Paul Newton, a systems dynamics professional and one of my mentors, said that as I add every rate, level, auxiliary, constant or other element in the model building process I should write a narrative and place it in the comment space provided in the Vensim equation window for that element. This narrative should tell the story of that step in the process - explaining why the element was added and what the equation (or symbol in a CLD) relating the element to the rest of the model means. He said that the modeler should make use of this accumulated running narrative when making presentations of the model, telling the story of the model verbally as the graphic model is presented piece by piece.
