I think the classic clinical psychology model offers some good insight into learning and integration: Awareness, Acceptance, Action. Each has a delay associated with it, and when viewed along a time continuum each preceding stage is necessary for progressing to the next. What strikes me is that the same continuum could be applied to both the teacher and the student, though the dynamics of moving from stage to stage might be quite different for each.
