Dear Tony:
You're right, as a child only to act or intervene at the right time for the child to understand the pervasiveness of interdependence, this applies to the case of children, perhaps as an adult if you have to work a little with the paradigm shift.
I was professor of chemical engineering for 30 years in the TEC de Monterrey, Mexico, my generation and I are currently developing a learning community to find better policies to help stem the deteriorating social situation in my country and believe me that weighs heavily on how we were educatedvirtually no awareness or understanding of all these cycles and causal interconnections and is very hard to impress an adult to see new paths to solve deep causes of social problems we have, we must begin by understanding of the system dynamics.
There are few human inventions that help us visualize the impact of our decisions over time, so I think that systems thinking is fantastic and as Chad says, everything is interconnected we want to see or not being aware of it or not.
Have a great day.
