Hello Michael, You might want to consider a project that pulls from several academic subjects and integrates all of it into potential outcomes, which are defensible from a research point of view. For example, "if global warming were to accelerate its current trend and be inevitable, what could/should we do to minimize its impact on mankind? is moving to higher grounds the solution? or is it building retention walls?" Another example could deal with a current issue such as curbing the alarming HIV transmission rate. Another example yet could be the "energy crunch" the world is headed to. The US has 5% of the world's population but uses 25% of the total energy output. If the other countries achieve a more developed status, where would the energy come from? at what cost? Any of these examples lend themselves to a competition, much like DARPA's "Grand Challenge" (http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/), where the goal is so demanding that nobody is expected to meet it, so it is about who can get the farthest in this course. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.
