Estimado Ed.
Nice organic metaphor: Elephant between teacher and student. Thanks, Bill. Now, who put the elephant there? How might the elephant be dismantled or otherwise removed? What tactical leverage-points are there?
In your interesting comment, I think the elephant can not remove or dismantle but rather it must tame and I recall that I shared with another idea that has to do with the social component of the education system: When we speak of the social and cultural need to take into account the social system are the external manifestations of cultural thinking patterns and of profound human needs, emotions, strengths, weaknesses. Changing them is not as simple as saying "now all change," or of trusting that he who knows the good shall do the good.
I believe that the first thing to do is ask who is our client (the student, family, community, society we serve), what are your needs, what is your perception about how are you needs are being satisfied, we must move quickly to see if it already has invented a measuring stick for all these needs, I know one called Gallup CE11 and serves to know the (Customer Engagement), in particular allows us to measure the index rate client's emotional involvement is a key element that has great influence on performance and is connected to the "Employee Engagement" of teacher and leadership style of school principals.
You see magic as emerging cause-effect cycles that underlie the social part of the educational phenomenon? this is how this can be tamed elephant that has found Mr. Bill.
Again I invite you to continue to hunt elephants, I have a slingshot with a telescope .... They are ready.
