Well, Jay -- probably they're bored because they see no relationship between what's being taught in school and their own lives. The lessons might as well be about the details of making cheese bunnies.
To stay focused and interested, they'd have to believe that all this hard word and abstract reasoning was going to pay off for them someday
On the other hand, since they are not totally blind and deaf, they look around and see 15 million unemployed and 3 million jobs, and none of the people they know who just graduated got any kind of job at all. They see the reality that the American Dream has come and gone. They all know at least one person who has gone homeless.
So, all this schooling business is a total waste of time, in their minds. If they raise that question they just get patted on the head and told "trust us, we know what we're doing."
