I just ran into a long, seven-chapter "book" available on the Internet, written by Joël de Rosnay, titled "The Macroscope." It's a rambling discourse, much of it (on system dynamics, at least) not original to the author, but ...

Chapter 2 provides some very nice words and graphics for introducing fundamental concepts of systems thinking and justifications for their use.
There's also a mini-lecture on the foundations and history of system dynamics. Here's the URL:

I don't know anything about this guy, but I like what he does here. You may find it useful, too.
