Steve, You seem to be describing what I would model as an inflow. What the teacher does is an inflow to the stock that represents the self-esteem or engagement felt by the student. The “wide variety of student dispositions” seems to be the key element you are identifying that causes “different kinds of responses.” In my mental model the “student dispositions” are a stock called “self-esteem” or “engagement.” In my mental model the “different kinds of responses” are the outflow called “self-talk” or some variation of that name. In my mental model, the student is where the leverage points are and the teacher might be one of the people to take action to nudge over time the student’s “target self-esteem” or “target engagement.” Parents, grandparents, peers, coaches, piano teachers also might take action if they have the relationship and the tools to influence the student’s “target self-esteem” or “target engagement.” Tim Joy would probably tell me I should have nouns for the stocks and verbs for the flows. Sorry, I forgot that detail. Richard
