I ran into Schrodinger's ideas of emergence in 1950 while studying physics in Edinburgh. Many scientists recognized the concepts and went on from there. Today emergence and "downward causation," introduced by another Nobelist, brain researcher Roger Sperry are at the heart of many new theories of evolution by scientists, like Kauffman, Gould, GellMann and others.
