An Encyclopedia of Learning Modalities
Posted by Bill Ellis on 12/30/2004
Would anyone on this list like to tell the world what K-12SD is all about. We are assembling "An Encyclopedia of Learning Modalities" to help people understand their options for learning, and to let the world know the options to education. Here's our invitation:
> > 'A Coalition for Self-Learning,' has initiated a project to draft an > encyclopedia of learning modalities -- homeschooling, public > schooling, charter school, democratic schools, ISPs, Folk Schools, > cyberlearning, and distance learning are among them.
> We have the listserv > as a gathering point, and a place to store entries in it "Files." > To date it has an "Index" CH #0 of proposed entries, Chapter #1 the > white paper that was our starting point, and a couple of examples. > Everyone and anyone who wants to participate is invited to join and to > submit a draft of whatever they want to say about the ways we might > learn in the future. If you want more information see: > > > > I hope you and/or others in the K-12SD area will participate. > Below are the proposed ground rules: > >> Many people have different ideas on what the future learning system, >> or non-system might be. >> >> 1) So a first priority is to agree that everyone is right. >> The door is open for any idea than anyone wants to develop and/or >> describe. >> >> 2) So lets start by everyone just putting all of our cards on the >> table and not make judgments on who is right or which is best. >> Among learning modalities I can think of are: >> public schools, homeschooling, charter schools, democratic schools, >> unschooling, deschooling, independent study programs. >> Everyone who wants to participate should add their own. >> What can you to the pot? >> >> 3) steps beyond that are open for discussion. >> But we might also select the issue, topic, or modality each of us >> would like as our responsibility. (for me I'll accept a) Learning >> Communities, and b) deschooling and c) would be pleased to join >> others in rewriting the White Paper and d) drafting a mission >> statment. >> >> 4) By taking responsibility for a portion does not mean, >> necessarily, working alone. Each of us should feel free to invite >> anyone we think knows the topic to participate equally with the rest of us. >> >> 5) Everyone can take a reasonable time to develop a draft of a piece >> for the compendium. All drafts will be put in a file open for anyone >> to read and to comment on. The authors may or may not take into >> account comments and redraft his or her entry. >> >> NOW we need comments on this as an outline for our opens space >> project. >> AND we need participant to get in the water and get wet. >> AND we need each to invite others to join the project. >> Bill Ellis, Participant >
