I'm afraid that Nancy may be closer to the mark than what we would like to believe regarding the reading of professional journals. I would be interested in such a survey. Our state social studies council (WCSS) publishes a journal as does the NCSS. I would invite Nancy, John, Jeff, or any others to submit an article on the use of systems concepts in the social studies classroom. Contact me and I can put you in touch of the editors of those journals.
We have tried to spread the word in Door County (with assistance from Jeff & John and others) and NE WI but have found that our "infection" has not spread very far.
Another approach might be to offer presentations at local (state) conferences or have regional systems conferences. It is difficult for teachers (both in terms of money and time) to attend conferences in Washington, New Hampshire, etc. The WCSS annual conference will be held in Madison, WI in March 2006 and the NCSS annual conference will be held in Kansas City in November.
