Niall,
I will try to make time to go through a marvellous book I picked up on a discount table a few years ago. It is titled, "Mythology; The Illustrated Anthology of World Myth & Storytelling", Duncan Baird Publishers, London, 2002, General Editor: C. Scott Littleton, 680 pages.
It is a comprehensive brick of a book, that covers ancient myth covering Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece & Rome, Celtic Myth, The Far East, The New World and The South. There are countless stories of man's folly including of course the common themes of creation, a great flood, and the end of the world. I'll see if I can pick out some of those relevant to your needs. A book of endless fascination and entertainment. When I'm feeling strong enough! I love to pick it up and browse through a section. The common themes certainly speak to the human condition - even our contemporary "sophisticated" selves!
Cheers,
Bill
