It may be a bit of a judgement call as to whether things have improved or deteriorated, and definitions of inauthentic and authentic communities may be elusive, but they are conversations worth having.
People might be interested in more recent works, both quantitative and qualitative. I haven't read Etzioni, but some snowy week it might be fun to trace the path from 1968 to 1997.

I also found, in my own decades of research and praxis that it was dangerous in my own learning to privilege recent writings over those from the past. Many of my current teachers are long dead. My copy of John Dewey's Education and Democracy is falling apart. Martin Buber wrote about authentic community and relationships. I'm not likely to read Buber as a primary source, but found the following useful. Some brief references to Etzioni can be found in this online encyclopedia as well.
