I think probably so, yes. But I'm not sure that's necessary in order to understand connectedness. I can understand that a whole village-full of goats needs more to eat than each individual goat does (and therefore understand the tragedy of the commons), without having to understand what the relationships between the different goats or villagers are. For a full-scale analysis of the Commons system I would need to understand the the way villagers think, but that needn't stop me starting to come to terms with the problems of systems at a beginning level.
