Steve - when you said "schools are closed systems", I had a sudden thought. Could it be that schools are not really closed, so much as there is a significant delay between the cultural and environmental forces on children vis-a-vis their impact on student learning, and the efforts of schools to counter negative forces to reinforce learning?
