SD beginner : immaterial flow modeling for computer science topic ?
Posted by Michel Lutz on 6/16/2010
Hello all, I am a french PhD student and I am studying the SDEP roadmaps, because I would like to use SD to model relationships within an information system. As SD is quite new to me, I have a doubt you may be able to clarify : can we use SD to model "immaterial" flows ? For instance, in the scope of my subject, I am interested on modeling the availability of some performance indicators in an information system : - I assume I won't face any issue to model relationships dealing with databases free space (can be considered as a level, and rates could be the space required according to the software activity) - my concern is about the server (CPU) availability : it is estimated by the %age of CPU used. Is it correct to consider the %age of CPU used as a level too ? (again, which could change according to the software activity). Following what I've read, I am not very comfortable with this, because I have the feeling a %age cannot be considered as a level, only as a rate... but in the other hand, I have no idea on how to handle this another way (this indicator cannot be considered just as a rate in my model) Is one of you able to provide me some clues to clarify this? Maybe some papers dealing with this kind of issue? Sorry for disturbing you (and for my poor english), and thank you very much for you support. Best regards, Michel
