Changing the Culture

There are many good people and organizations working on this issue: Deborah Meier, Diane Ravitch, ASCD with their whole child approach and frequent encouragement to its members to write to their legislators, among others. The damage has been clearly stated in many venues (mostly by educators), but it seems not to be heard by the powers that be: the business community, the politicians and legislators beholden to the business community, including many folks who think they understand public school education because they went through school and just want to stick with the basic reading, writing, and arithmetic. I believe that what we are missing is a workable framework for thinking about the issues. Culture and diversity of culture are foundational to the development and change of institutions like pubic schools. A workable theory that operationalizes itself through systems thinking (and system dynamics) is certainly an attractive possibility.
