I am a retired Electrical Engineer and I volunteer as a Math and Physics tutor at our local high school in Madisonville, TN. In August I am doing an In-Service on Systems Thinking & STELLA software for local high schools in our county. I am very much a believer in systems thinking and applying these concepts in math, science and literature etc. I am trying to get buy-in from the teachers so that we can purchase a site license for STELLA. Any suggestions of how to put together a presentation that will sell this concept to the teachers is greatly appreciated. Part of the problem is that money is very scarce being a rural school district.
I am planning to follow the basic outline presented by Diana M. Fisher's work " Lessons in Mathematics A Dynamic Approach" and mention that I utilized STELLA with an English teacher analyzing the play Hamlet. The vision is to get STELLA installed at the school and I will put together basic problems, work book etc. that teachers and students can work on. These problems will blend in with Algebra I & II courses, Forensic Science and Physics. I have already been trained utilizing the software in industry, but I am not a certified teacher. Any help or suggestions in making this vision realizable will be greatly appreciated.
