Change in state standards

Yes, this 'mile high, inch-deep' is a problem in many K-12 subject areas. The standards tend to be developed by committees that apparently find it politically easier to include many areas with lots of detail, rather than focus on big ideas. I would think that a mapping of this would show how confused the academic standards have become. For the sake of learning, we really do have to develop coherent standards and frameworks.
It may be useful to map the process of developing standards and assessments in addition to mapping the actual resulting standards. We may find that the process itself needs to change if we are to produce improved standards.
