Two of the better resources for this type of thing are books by Dr.
Stephen G. Boyce. 1. Forestry Decisions, published by the USDA Forest Service as General Technical Report SE-35 (and available free on line, I think, as a pdf), and 2. Landscape Forestry, published by John Wiley and Sons.

In the early 1980"s, as a graduate student at Duke University, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Boyce. He pioneered the application of system dynamics modeling to the understanding and management of forests and forest ecosystems. Each book contains thought provoking work and a number of powerful ideas.
