In addition to those resources suggested by Samuel Austin, I recommend that you look at Forest Fire agent-based model: http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/models/Fire
The point is that system dynamics is poor at spatial modeling (though some SD tools support it), that is why agent-based model is more appropriate.

Brief description of the model: WHAT IS IT? This project simulates the spread of a fire through a forest. It shows that the fire's chance of reaching the right edge of the forest depends critically on the density of trees. This is an example of a common feature of complex systems, the presence of a non-linear threshold or critical parameter.
