I usually just lurk on this list, but this message hits so close to home. I am Bonnie Bracey Sutton, I work to do outreach and broaden participation for minorities and women, well that's a wide stretch, but I was involved nationally in the first technology outreach.

Math

In trying to get people interested in computational sciences, math ..
lack of math and understanding is a barrier.

In trying to create STEM awareness and pathways, math is a barrier because it is so poorly taught in most places.

Problem solving and the kind of thinking one needs to be able to do computational sciences. Not taught.


I was a classroom teacher with lots of years at lots of levels have
done new math , old math, everykind of math, but preferred
methodology that involved thinking not memorization. Concord.org is one
of the places I used, as well as the Math Forum.
