"Feeding frenzy." Yes. That's a systems thinking metaphor that resonates for me on this one so far.

As for the (non-) bravery of politicians, I experimented for a term as a local elected official. Abusive constituents are really unpleasant, even when few in number, even regarding only locally-politicized issues, and even when not in the direct receiving line of their vitriol. In my area, many people learn an abusive style of political interaction from talk radio and tv as far as I can see.
