What Dr. Forrester said about science, also applies to math (calculating) taught in public schools. Educators are taking steps in the belief they will solve a problem and they are actually the cause of the problem and the more they do, in an attempt to teach calculating, the worse they make it. Calculating test scores have been decreasing over time and also decrease from 3rd to 5th to 8th to 10th grade. Mr. Wolfram suggests we call it calculating instead of math.
Short video on TED.com supports the idea of using computer modeling to teach kids what they need to know in the real world. http://www.ted.com/talks/conrad_wolfram_teaching_kids_real_math_with_computers.html
I think the K12systemdynamics community should spread the word to everyone. If you look at the comments on the website below the video, you will see educators revealing their assumptions and beliefs that they know how to solve the problem and that Wolfram does not. I think Wolfram is a leader working “on” the system. We need leaders working “on” the system to change it.
Why not use his narrative and our own dynamic modeling slides, and have all of us give the same PR pitch to anyone who will sit still for about 15 minutes? I have a copy of the transcript and will work on power point slides but I’m not sure about what models to use.
