Question 1 Revised: In The Tragedy of the Commons Archetype, All of the examples you listed, deal with defining the system boundaries. To solve the engine knocking they put lead into gasoline. However their system boundaries for the solution did not include the lead getting into the air, children breathing the lead and having their brain and nervous system affected. After the system boundary was expanded, then we created unleaded gasoline that doesn’t cause the engine to knock. The Tragedy of the Commons Archetype is all about defining the boundaries of the system. If each sheep farmer defines a limited, closely held system boundary then everything collapses. If the system boundary is expanded to include all the sheep farmers, all the environmental services provided by the land, water and air, then you have a different system and a different outcome. Endogenous is what’s inside the system boundaries when you complete a modeling process, with verification and validation. Starting with a system boundary that only includes combustion engine vehicles and not alternatives, we can complete a process of verification and validation because we have historical data. If we add fuel cells and expand the system boundaries, then we will have to make assumptions, deal with unemployment, what to do with all the junked cars, how fast will the transition take place? and many other questions. Fuel cells start as exogenous and then become endogenous. Richard Turnock
